My top 3 Austin resources for parents

Parents have often told me that navigating an Autism diagnosis can be a very isolating experience! Connecting with organizations and people who “get it” is so important, giving you the chance to vent about the frustrations, hear about resources from families who have tried the things and succeeded (or failed!), and be supported.

Here are my favorite Autism resources in the Austin area. I highly recommend you check these organizations out! Each of these organizations is non-profit, not providing direct services. They are for supporting families in navigating the resources and support they may need for their child.

Vela Families

  • Variety of resources for families including case management, support groups, courses for parents on Autism, navigating special education, and more.

  • Their courses are taught by previous Vela course attendees and graduates - so support is parent-to-parent or caregiver based!

  • Family Fun Day - December 15, 2024 - More details coming soon!

Texas Autism Society

  • Website is full of information on local resources, facebook groups for parents/caregivers, and general information about Autism.

  • Check our their calendar: support groups, events, advocacy groups and more!

  • Annual Texas Autism Walk - held in Leander in 2024; These walks are a great opportunity to connect with other families and be surrounded by a community of caregivers and people who “get it”.

Texas Parent-to-Parent

  • Another great organization to connect with other parents and get connected to resources in the area that may be helpful or input on navigating special education. You can get a parent mentor, too.

  • Support for NICU families, as well.

If you have a favorite local organization that supports families with Autism in the Austin area, please drop it in the comments below so we can all check it out!
