What to expect during a speech therapy evaluation:

A speech & language evaluation includes:

  • Parent interview

  • Play-based observation

  • Conversation-based language sample, if appropriate

  • Standardized evaluations

  • Review of findings and client-centered goal planning

You can expect your child’s speech therapy evaluation to take approximately 60 minutes.

During the evaluation, you’ll see the speech therapist complete a play-based observation with your child. This will primarily look like the speech therapist playing directly with your child and getting them comfortable.

Depending on age and participation, you will also see the speech therapist complete a standardized language evaluation with your child.

Right away! We’ll spend time reviewing our observations with you directly at the end of the evaluation. In addition, we typically give a few strategies that you can immediately try at home!

We aim to have evaluations written within a week of the evaluation and you’ll be able to access a copy through your client portal.

What’s next?

If speech therapy services are recommended for your child, we’ll work with you to create speech and language goals that are unique to your child.

Therapy services will begin in your child’s community-based location as soon as the evaluation is written, necessary authorizations are obtained, and your child’s clinic or school has confirmed their schedule.
